The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is available to any Australian student undertaking a three or four year course of study approved by the Trustees. Undergraduate students who have commenced their studies are also eligible to apply for the scholarship. Successful applicants can chose to study at one of the nominated Australian universities or colleges. In some instances the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is also offered to postgraduate students who can undertake a one year course of study at the University of Cambridge in the UK. Successful applicants are required to study at one of the following institutions:
The course to be undertaken under the scholarship will be proposed by the applicant and approved by the Trustees.
Students who intend to defer their studies and take a "gap" year should not apply for the scholarship. Students should only submit an application if they intend to enter and commence the course proposed during the same academic year.
The value and number of scholarships each year are determined by the Trustees after having regard to all relevant factors including the applicants' personal circumstances. A full C.A.S.Hawker Scholarship normally covers all college fees and university HECS fees. Subject to availability and the location of the chosen course of study, the scholarship requires successful applicants to take up residence at St Mark's College in Adelaide, Robb College in Armidale, Burgmann College in Canberra, Roseworthy Residential College in Adelaide, Marcus Oldham College in Geelong and Trinity College in Cambridge. Selection is made through interview and is be based on personal qualities as well as academic ability. 1) There is no additional examination specifically for the scholarship. No applicant will be selected until after he or she has been interviewed by one or more of the Trustees and after the Trustees have made appropriate enquiries concerning the suitability of the applicant. 2) No account is taken of the creed, station or financial status of any applicant. 3) In selecting a scholar, the Trustees may give preference to students intending to enter the Australian political field or other such activity considered beneficial to the Australian community. They also take into consideration such qualities and stipulations as they may deem appropriate to the wishes of Kathleen Lilias Needham as expressed in the Trust Deed. These wishes include : 4) Before confirming or announcing the award of a scholarship, the Trustees require the scholar they have tentatively selected to give in writing an undertaking that if awarded a scholarship they will a) enter and complete the course approved for the scholarship Applications for the 2011 Hawker Scholarship open on Monday 6th December 2010 and close Friday 7th January 2011. Interviews are conducted in Adelaide shortly thereafter with successful applicants being notified of the details of their scholarship by mid February.
By 31 October of each academic year of tenure of the scholarship, the scholar will send to the Trustees a written report on his or her academic progress during that year. The report should also include any other matters and activities considerd relevant or of interest. The scholarship will be forfeited if in the opinion of the Trustees the scholarship holder:- 1) is guilty of serious misconduct or behaves in any way which would have been taken into consideration against their selection as a Hawker Scholar. 2) fails their examinations without good cause to the satisfaction of the Trustees 3) commits a breach of any rule made by the Trustees in pursuance of the power conferred upon them by the Trust Deed 4) resigns their scholarship At their
discretion, the rules of the scholarship may be changed by
the Trustees from time to time. |
