Who can apply?

The C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is available to any Australian student undertaking a three or four year course of study approved by the Trustees. In some instances the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship is offered to post graduate students. Successful applicants can choose to study at one of the nominated Australian universities or Cambridge University in the UK. TOP

Successful applicants are required to study at one of the following institutions:

  • Australian National University - ACT
  • Flinders University of South Australia - SA
  • University of Adelaide (including Roseworthy Campus) - SA
  • Roseworthy Residential College
  • University of New England - NSW
  • University of South Australia - SA
  • Marcus Oldham College - VIC
  • University of Cambridge - UK

What course can I study?

The course to be undertaken under the scholarship will be proposed by the applicant and approved by the Trustees. TOP

I am taking a "gap" year. Should I apply?

Students who intend to defer their studies and take a "gap" year should not apply for the scholarship. Students should only submit an application if they intend to enter and commence the course proposed during the same academic year. TOP

What is the value of the scholarship?

The full value and number of scholarships each year are determined by the Trustees after having regard to all relevant factors including the applicants' personal circumstances.

The Hawker Scholarship normally covers all compulsory fees, books, stationery and equipment with an allowance for living expenses.

Subject to availability and the location of the chosen course of study , the scholarship requires successful applicants to take up residence at St Mark's College in Adelaide, Robb College in Armidale, Burgmann College in Canberra, Roseworthy Residential Collegeand Trinity College in Cambridge.

A contribution to travel expenses may also be made.
Payment of monies associated with the scholarship will be made in a manner determined by the Trustees.
Before any monies are paid, scholarship holders must provide to the
Trustees evidence that he or she has been accepted for admission to the approved course and where applicable to the associated college.

What are the selection criteria?

Selection is made through interview and is be based on personal qualities as well as academic ability.

1) There is no additional examination specifically for the scholarship. No applicant will be selected until after he or she has been interviewed by one or more of the Trustees and after the Trustees have made appropriate enquiries concerning the suitability of the applicant.

2) No account is taken of the creed, station or financial status of any applicant.

3) In selecting a scholar, the Trustees may give preference to students intending to enter the Australian political field or other such activity considered beneficial to the Australian community. They also take into consideration such qualities and stipulations as they may deem appropriate to the wishes of Kathleen Lilias Needham as expressed in the Trust Deed.

These wishes include :

a) The applicant must be of good character and conduct, well mannered and be fair and honourable in his or her dealings.

b) The applicant must have given some indications of citizenship, of loyalty and patriotism to Australia.

c) The applicant must have reasonable academic ability but need not be in the highest academic grade. The Trustees must however be satisfied that the applicant is capable of successfully completing the course undertaken. The Trustees will be the sole judge of that outcome.

4) Before confirming or announcing the award of a scholarship, the Trustees require the scholar they have tentatively selected to give in writing an undertaking that if awarded a scholarship they will

a) enter and complete the course approved for the scholarship

b) subject to availability of accommodation and the location of the university at which the course is being undertaken, reside for the duration of the scholarship or for a period of three years (which ever is the lesser) at Burgmann College in Canberra, St Mark's College in Adelaide, Robb College in Armidale, Roseworthy Residential College or Trinity College in Cambridge.

Those wishing to reside at Trinity College Cambridge must first be accepted by the University of Cambridge and the College for a course of study by following the normal procedures for admission and they should be aware that they will be competing with other applicants to the College. Information on admission procedures is available via the Trinity College website (www.trin.cam.ac.uk).

c) immediately inform the Trustees in writing of any changes of address or of any new circumstance significantly affecting the purpose and conditions of the scholarship. TOP

Applications for the 2009 Hawker Scholarship open on Monday 1st December 2008 and close Friday 9th January 2009.TOP

How do I apply?

Either go to the C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship Application Form on the website, print out a copy, complete the details and send it as directed. You may also write to or telephone the secretary to the Trustees at the following address and request that an Application Form be sent to you.

When will I be notified?

You will be notified if you have been short listed for an interview by late January. Interviews are conducted in Adelaide shortly thereafter with successful applicants being notified of the details of their scholarship by mid February. TOP

Annual Report & Rules

By 31 October of each academic year of tenure of the scholarship, the scholar will send to the Trustees a written report on his or her academic progress during that year. The report should also include any other matters and activities considerd relevant or of interest. - Extension or Deferral applications for Current Scholars

Please refer to the "Current Scholars" Section of the website to download the "Hawker Scholar Reporting Template".

Current Hawker Scholars wishing to apply for an extension or deferral of their scholarship are to use the same reporting template and provide additional information as outlined in the template.

The scholarship will be forfeited if in the opinion of the Trustees the scholarship holder:-

1) is guilty of serious misconduct or behaves in any way which would have been taken into consideration against their selection as a Hawker Scholar.

2) fails their examinations without good cause to the satisfaction of the Trustees

3) commits a breach of any rule made by the Trustees in pursuance of the power conferred upon them by the Trust Deed

4) resigns their scholarship

At their discretion, the rules of the scholarship may be changed by the Trustees from time to time. TOP
