Stuart
Watts was educated at The Armidale School (TAS) in Armidale on the New
England Tablelands NSW, graduating in 1997. He completed Bachelor of Business
at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in 2001 and then spent
time working, studying and teaching in India and Japan.
At
TAS, Stuart was School Captain in 1997, an outstanding all rounder of
exceptional ability and commitment and was actively involved in all facets
of school life.
He
is a talented sportsperson and played hockey, soccer and cricket and competed
in athletics. He represented Northern NSW Under 21’s in cricket
and in athletics represented TAS at GPS level and was champion for his
age at TAS for three consecutive years.
The
Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) Kochi Prefecture in Japan
Stuart undertook following the completion of his degree at QUT in 2001
involved organizing international days for Japanese students to learn
about and experience different cultures and assisted the development of
English programs in rural Japan. Other activities included basic translating
for local villagers and the Board of Education and assisting the planning
of overseas exchanges for local Japanese students.
Since
returning from Japan, Stuart has been involved in various international
humanitarian activities including traveling with a group of Armidale students
to work in an orphanage in Fiji. In January 2004, Stuart went to India
to organise an Australian high schools initiative titled “Pilgrimage
of Hope” which will involve students working with Mother Teresa’s
Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata and possibly a visit to the Vatican
for an audience with His Holiness the Pope and then to London to meet
His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury and Her Majesty the Queen.
Stuart
Watts is a high achiever, an outstanding young Australian and a deserved
recipient of a C.A.S. Hawker Scholarship.
MEGAN
DAVIS
Hawker Scholar: 2004
Degree: Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) - Marketing
Institution: Australian National University
& in residence at Burgmann College
Career goal: To pursue a career in government, developing public education
programs and campaigns to modify behavior on important social issues including
nutrition, smoking and water usage.
Megan Davis was educated at Fairholme College in Toowoomba on the Darling
Downs, graduating in 1999. She completed Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of
Business degrees at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) in 2003.
Megan is proud of her contribution to the community and in 1999 was awarded
an Order of Australia Medal for citizenship and her contribution to her
school and the community. As well as her staff and student elected position
of Head Girl at Fairholme College, Megan was elected by her peers to the
position of President of the College’s Interact Club, the largest
in Australia.
During her time as President, the club raised $27,000 for charity.
Megan attended the 1999 Australian Student Leadership Conference and was
subsequently recruited by AUSTRAIN and the Australian Youth Development
Program to assist in delivering several three-day leadership conferences
to hundreds of school captains.
Megan also participated in the Youth Leadership Convention for World Vision.
This experience taught her many valuable skills needed for charitable
fundraising and was a major influence in focusing her career goal to improve
people’s lives through Social Marketing.
Megan is an all rounder. She enjoys playing a range of sports however
cricket is her main interest as both a player and a coach. She is an accredited
ACB Level 0 coach. She has been received numerous Rotary, Department of
Families, Youth and Community Care, Lions Youth of the Year and Mayne
Nickless Community Service Awards.
Megan has been actively involved in all facets of student and faculty
life at University of Southern Queensland and at ANU has been approached
to become involved in Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), a non-profit
organization involved in ‘learning, practicing and teaching the
principles of free enterprise, thereby improving the standard of living
for millions in the process’.
Megan Davis is a high achiever with a strong commitment to the broader
community and has clearly demonstrated the attributes of a Charles Allan
Seymour Hawker Scholar.
JESSICA
ALLEN
Hawker Scholar: 2004 - 2005
Degree: Bachelor of Arts/Law
Institution: Australian National University
& in residence at Burgmann College
Career goal: To pursue a career in public service, particularly in the
area of policy determination and implementation.
Jessica Allen was educated at the Abbotsleigh Girls School in Sydney.
She completed her secondary education in 2002 and achieved a Universities
Admission Index of 97.5.
In 2002 Jessica was Head Prefect at Abbotsleigh and won an Academic Honour
Prize, the Special Senior Prefect Prize and the Zonta Young Woman in Public
Affairs Award.
She is an outstanding student. She is competent, articulate, composed
and enthusiastic. She has a well balanced approach to study and life skills.
She is meticulous in the preparation and execution of tasks and demonstrated
strong leadership while at Abbotsleigh.
Jessica is a creative thinker and an able public speaker who can engage
an audience well. She has absolute integrity and is fair and democratic.
She represented Abbotsleigh in softball, hockey, tennis and soccer, gained
a bronze medallion in lifesaving and was involved with the Interact Club
as Vice President.
Jessica has a passion for drama and has played many leading roles. She
is a capable debater and is committed to the environment. As President
of the Environment Club in year 11, she used her leadership skills to
inspire others and assisted in implementing a recycling program and raising
awareness of the use of solar power panels at the school.
She has provided volunteer work at a school in Peru and has raised funds
for a hospital in Ethiopia.
Jessica is currently a second year Arts/Law student at ANU. In 2003 she
was the First Year Representative for the Law Students Society (LSS) and
edited the LSS Alternative Law Handbook. In 2004 she is the LSS Administration
Vice-President.
KAYLENE
NUSKE
Hawker Scholar: 2004 – 2006
Degree: Bachelor of Agriculture
Institution: University of Adelaide
& in residence at Roseworthy Campus
Career goal: to make a major contribution to regional and rural Australia
through active participation in sustainable primary production specializing
in salt land agronomy.
Kaylene Nuske was educated at the Tintinara Area School and the Urrbrae
Agricultural High School in Adelaide. She completed her secondary education
in 2003 as Dux of Urrbrae with a Tertiary Entrance Rank of 93.3.
Kaylene is a self-confessed country girl. She is the 3rd generation on
her family’s farming property is near Tintinara, 220 kilometres
south of Adelaide in South Australia.
Kaylene has excelled academically throughout her secondary education.
She demonstrated a thoroughness and attention to detail and her hard work
has been rewarded with exceptionally good final year results.
Kaylene has made significant contributions to the broader community and
is a regular participant in the World Vision 40 Hour Famine Appeal.
Kaylene has always been passionate about the importance of agriculture
to Australia and intends to make a major contribution to the sustainable
future of this important industry.
She has witnessed first hand the devastating impact of salinity on the
landscape and has chosen to study Salt land Agronomy at the Roseworthy.
By furthering her knowledge of this subject, she believes she will be
well equipped to contribute to solving a serious problem facing an increasing
percentage of Australia’s farming land.
Australia’s rural sector needs more young people with the ideals
and committment of Kaylene Nuske.
CHARLES
DEUTSCHER
Hawker
Scholar: 2004 - 2006
Degree: Arts / Law (International Relations)
Institution: Australian National University
& in residence at Burgmann College
Career goal: To pursue a career in International Relations/Law/Languages,
working towards a leadership role with the aim of improving the quality
of life in our world community.
Charles Deutscher was educated at the Ballarat Grammar School in Victoria.
He studied French, English, Further Mathematics, Biology, Legal Studies
and Geography. He completed his secondary education in 2003 with an ENTER
score of 96.4.
Charles was school Vice-Captain and has an impressive list of awards and
certificates as a result of his achievements while at Ballarat Grammar.
Some of these include a Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, school colours for
music and community service, numerous academic merit and academic excellence
awards, a bronze medallion in lifesaving and a Rotary Youth Leadership
Award.
His community work includes participating in the Round Square International
Service Project to Kenya in December 2002, working with Amnesty International,
Salvation Army doorknocks, participation in Clean Up Australia Day in
2001 and 2002 and the World Vision 40 Hour Famine Appeal in 2001, 2002
and 2003.
Charles is an outstanding student from a multi-cultural background who
has many extraordinary qualities. As well as the time he spent in Kenya,
he has travelled to North America, Europe, South Africa, New Caledonia
and Asia. He is a confident, articulate and enthusiastic young man who
is determined to make the most of every opportunity.
Charles is a creative thinker who leads by example, shows excellent leadership
qualities and is capable of achieving at the highest level across a range
of disciplines.
He understands Charles Hawker’s strengths and his commitment to
his fellow man and in his own life, he is determined to make a difference.
AMIE
MILLIGAN
Hawker Scholar: 2004 – 2006
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (International Relations)
Institution: Australian National University
& in residence at Burgmann College
Career goal: To pursue a career with the Department of Foreign Affairs
or AUSAID that would lead to environmentally sustainable agriculture and
tourism. She also wants to contribute to indigenous reconciliation by
building bridges not barriers.
Amie Milligan is a country person and proud of her family dairy farm at
Cundletown in NSW.
Amie
was educated at the Taree High School, was School Captain and graduated
in 2003 with a University Admission Index of 96.05.
Amie by any measure is a high achiever, an outstanding student and a major
contributor to the community.
Her
academic achievements have been recognized by a significant number of
school-based, state and national awards and prizes including repeated
dux of several subjects and credits and distinctions in numerous national
science and chemistry competitions.
During her time at Taree High School, Amie demonstrated excellent leadership
skills and held a number of senior student positions. She is a debater,
writer, sportsperson, broadcaster, musician and singer. She excels in
every thing she does. She is a committed environmentalist and an activist
in indigenous rights.
Amie’s significant contribution to the community has been recognised
with numerous local, state and national awards. She has been awarded an
Order of Australia Association ‘ Certificate of Commendation’
and medal for Community Service. She was selected as a member of the National
Youth Roundtable in Canberra in 2002 and was invited to deliver the opening
address.
In 2003 Amie was one of 100 young people in the Asia-Pacific region selected
to attend Eco-Innovate 03, a United Nations conference on environmental
sustainability.
Amie was one of eighteen in NSW elected to the SRC Council Working Party
and responsible for coordinating the 2002 State Conference and took part
in the Young Endeavour Voyage form Melbourne to Sydney.
Amie is an outstanding person whose sustained commitment to the community
and personal development made her a strong candidate for a Hawker Scholarship.
