Goal: to make a major contribution to regional and rural Australia through
active participation in sustainable agriculture, business and marketing.
Teegan
Waples was educated at the Faith Lutheran Secondary School in Tanunda
in South Australia and the Adelaide TAFE. She completed her secondary
education in 2001 with a Tertiary Entrance Rank of 93.6. Teegan deferred
her university entrance and enrolled in and completed a Certificate 3
in Technical Production at TAFE in 2002.
Teegan is a self-confessed country girl. Her family’s grape growing
property is in Eden Valley however the desire to be closer to education
facilities resulted in a move to Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley.
Teegan has excelled academically throughout her secondary education. She
demonstrated a thoroughness and attention to detail in her work and achieved
her many goals. As School Captain at Faith, she had to juggle her responsibilities
in that position with her academic work. Teegan is an excellent communicator
and is comfortable and confident addressing large audiences and conducting
meetings.
She has an interest in theatre and has been involved with a number of
productions including ‘The King and I’ and ‘Nutcracker’.
Teegan has been involved with the United Nations Youth Association, the
Youth Parliament and was the local regional winner of the Lions Youth
of the Year in 2001.
Teegan is an Oliphant Science Awards prizewinner and represented her school
in public speaking, choir work, on the Student Representative Villages
and fund raising committee.
Teegan has always felt passionately about the importance of agriculture
to Australia and intends to make a major contribution to the sustainable
future of this important industry.
Teegan is studying a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Adelaide
and is the first Hawker Scholar in residence at Roseworthy Campus.
RODGER
SHANNON
Hawker Scholar: 2003
Degree: Bachelor of Business (Farm Management)
Institution: Marcus Oldham College
& in residence at Marcus Oldham College
Goal: to participate in, promote and develop a more sustainable Australian
farming system.
Rodger Shannon received his secondary education at The King’s School
Parramatta in NSW and is in 2003 is completing his third year of study
at Marcus Oldham College in Victoria.
Rodger achieved distinctions and high distinctions in all of the subjects
he studied in second year. His subjects last year included Farm Business
Management, Marketing, Information Management, Agricultural Engineering,
Plant Production and Management, Animal Production Principles and Integrated
Management Studies.
Rodger is passionate about agriculture and is committed to making a significant
contribution to his chosen field in the future. His childhood was spent
on his family’s corriedale stud and grain property at Cundal in
Central Western NSW. Following the death of his father when he was 12
years old, Rodger’s mother remarried and the family moved to a pastoral
property in the Hunter Valley managed by his step-father.
At The King’s School he was a capable student and participated in
a wide range of sporting activities including rugby union, swimming and
cricket. He was an active member of the School Cadet Corps and developed
a range of leadership and teamwork skills during this time.
When he successfully completed his HSC, Rodger went jackerooing on a grazing
property at Bourke with Clyde Agriculture and then to a mixed farming
property on the Liverpool Ranges near Willow Tree in NSW.
Rodger is studying at Marcus Oldham College (Business Management) and
is in residence at the College. Rodger intends to move into farm management
in the future and eventually own land - where he will put his theory of
sustainable farming into practice.
Rodger has already clearly displayed a strong commitment to the ideals
of community, participation and personal development upon which the Charles
Hawker Scholarship is founded.
LORRAINE INGHAM
Hawker Scholar: 2003 – 2005
Degree: Bachelor of Arts/Law (International Studies)
Institution: Australian National University
& in residence at Burgmann College
Goal: to secure a position with the Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade in the diplomatic service.
Lorraine Ingham was educated at the New England Girls’ School in
Armidale NSW. She completed her secondary education in 2002 and achieved
a Universities Admission Index of 98.15.
Lorraine was born in Hong Kong and has lived in Australia since she was
three years old. For the past 13 years has called Moree in NSW home. Lorraine
is a highly intelligent student with broad interests and well-developed
leadership skills. She has finely honed analytical skills and is able
to construct thoughtful and coherent solutions and responses to a wide
range of issues.
Lorraine received school awards in most of the subjects she studied and
received the English, Biology and Modern History prizes at the final Senior
Speech day at the New England Girls’ School in 2002. She was runner
up in the Zonta Women in Public Affairs Award and has been involved in
the Mock Trial Competition, Model United Nations Assembly and the Senior
Commonwealth Debating Competition.
Lorraine is an outstanding all rounder. She was NEGS Senior Captain in
her final year and was an active team member in a number of sports including
hockey, netball and touch football. Lorraine is also interested in drama
and represented NEGS as a public speaker. She was involved in Law Week
Schools in Parliament and gained a high distinction in Grade 6 Speech
and Drama.
She has been an active community worker, fund raising for the RFDS, UNICEF
and the Jean Colvin Cancer Hospital.
Lorraine is studying Arts/Law (International Relations) at the Australian
National University and is in residence at Burgmann College. She intends
to pursue a career with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Lorraine Ingham is a high achiever with commitment to the broader community
and has clearly demonstrated the attributes of a Charles Allan Seymour
Hawker Scholar.
CAROLYN
GILL
Hawker Scholar: 2003 – 2005
Degree: Bachelor of Arts/Law
Institution: Australian National University
& in residence at Burgmann College
Goal: to pursue interests in human rights and international relations
working with the Department of Foreign Affairs or as a member of Federal
Parliament.
Carolyn Gill was educated at the Pymble Public School and Abbotsleigh
Girls School in Sydney. She completed her secondary education in 2002
and achieved a Universities Admission Index of 99.05.
In 2002 Carolyn achieved her Queen Scout and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
She sings and plays the clarinet and has traveled to England, Europe and
the US with a number of school and youth orchestras.
She played a significant role in raising $18,000.00 for the Sir David
Martin Foundation which supports disturbed and disadvantaged young people,
and represented Australia at the Global Leaders Conference in Washington
DC and New York in 2001.
Academically Carolyn can be best described as a high achiever winning
the NSW Premier’s Award for Excellence in the 2002 HSC.
When Carolyn isn’t representing Australia, raising money for charity
or studying, she plays tennis, hockey, cricket, netball and touch football.
Carolyn also isn’t afraid of the grease paint and bright lights
and has tramped the boards in a range of school musicals and drama productions
– including Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, Man of La Mancha,
My Fair Lady and Romeo and Juliet.
Her service to the community is outstanding. She is a puppy raiser for
the NSW Guide Dog Association and volunteer for St Johns and the Royal
Lifesaving Association. She is a regular Red Cross blood donor, has participated
in various door knock appeals and World Vision 40 hour famines and rolls
her sleeves up for Meals on Wheels during Christmas holidays.
She is an accomplished debater and the recipient of the 1999 Girl Guides
BP Award. Carolyn understands the meaning of community service –
and has given freely of her time to make the lives of others more fulfilling
and meaningful. Her work experience with the Redfern office of the Sydney
Regional Aboriginal Corporation Legal Service assisted in her decision
to follow a career in law.
Carolyn is studying Arts/Law at the Australian National University and
is in residence at Burgmann College. She hopes her studies will lead her
to a career in human rights, international relations or federal politics.
Carolyn Gill has already clearly displayed a strong commitment to the
ideals upon which the Charles Hawker Scholarship is founded.
She is indeed an outstanding young Australian and a worthy Hawker Scholarship
recipient.
CHRISTIAN WINTERFIELD
Hawker Scholar: 2003 – 2005
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics)
Bachelor of Arts (Politics)
Institution: University of Adelaide
& in residence at St Mark’s College
Goal: to pursue a career that allows creative development of ideas in
the use of Mechatronics into functional products for the betterment of
human life and the environment.
Christian Winterfield was educated at Trinity College in Gawler in South
Australia studying Math’s 1 & 11, Physics, Chemistry and English.
He completed his secondary studies in 2002 and achieved a merit (20/20)
in physics and an overall Tertiary Entrance Rank of 99.35.
Christian was awarded the Trinity College David Strange Memorial Award
for the most outstanding student at the College in 2002. His academic
achievements have been recognized by a significant number of school-based,
state and national Awards and prizes including repeated dux of several
subjects and national Mathematics and Science prizes.
During his time at Trinity College, Christian demonstrated excellent leadership
skills and held a number of senior student, house and team sport positions
including House Captain and College Prefect.
Christian participated widely in the academic and cultural life of the
College. He has a passion for music, playing various instruments including
tenor horn, and now percussion for Barossa Junior Brass and has been awarded
College Blues for music. Christian is currently a member of the Tanunda
Town Band as principal drummer and is a member of local jazz ensemble
‘Five Little Men’. He also plays piano and has studied to
sixth grade standard.
He was one of six students to represent Australia in April 2002 at the
London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF). This gave Christian
the opportunity to share ideas and gain a wealth of knowledge by interacting
with 299 other participants from around the world. The forum offered the
participants the chance to visit world-class research facilities at Cambridge
University and the Airbus Multi-National Company in the UK.
In what little spare time he has, Christian plays chess, listens to music,
paints, is an active member of the St Mark’s Lutheran Church at
Freeling and designed and constructed an award winning carbon dioxide
powered dragster.
Christian is a remarkable young Australian. He is studying a Bachelor
of Engineering (Mechatronics) and Bachelor of Arts (Politics) at the University
of Adelaide and is in residence at St Mark’s College.
